  Gleaning

Since 2004, a small group of dedicated volunteers has run an end-of-market gleaning program. Each week, they ask farmers if they have any left over fruits, vegetables, meats, or baked goods that they will not be able to sell or use elsewhere.  Vendors donate their leftover food and the volunteers pack and deliver the donated food to Urban Ministries Community Café on Holloway Street. Since 2004, over 130,000 pounds of fresh, market food has been gleaned from our vendors and donated to Urban Ministries.

Gleaning is a win-win situation. Without gleaning, our farmers would have to take their leftover foods back to their farms. While some items left over at the end of Market can be stored and sold at a later date, other, more perishable items, such as tomatoes and greens, won’t wait an extra day without deteriorating to an un-saleable state. So, these left over items, which are still edible and delicious, might get thrown away, fed to animals or composted. Instead, this food is going directly to members of our community who are in need of a hot, healthy meal. Food is diverted from the waste stream and is used to help feed our neighbors in need.  Win-Win.
