PARKING AND STREET INFORMATION

The market is located at 501 Foster Street in The Pavilion at Durham Central Park. 

Parking can be found on the street around the market, in the parking lot on the corner of Hunt and Foster Street (across from Rise Durham and Urban Durham Realty), in the Ballpark Parking Lot on Corporation Street, and in the Measurement Inc. lot, 423 Morris Street (look for the Durham Farmers' Market parking sign). Handicapped parking is available near the corner of Hunt and Foster as detailed in the map above.

There are also public parking lots along Foster Street and on Morgan Street near the Carolina Theatre.

BILL POPE PHOTOGRAPHY

Bill Pope was one of the original vendors of the Durham Farmers’ Market in 1999. Bill’s goal is to highlight the beauty of this area, especially Durham. The large, amber gnarled roots of the Red Dawnwood tree at Duke Gardens, the diverse store fronts on Main Street, the old Wrigley mural on Parrish Street, and the deep purple cut irises at the Durham Farmers’ Market have been some of his many subjects. 

Many customers frame Bill’s greeting cards. The cards are also sent around the world. He cherishes an e-mail from a female army officer in Iraq who praised a landscape of Duke Gardens for adding β€œcolor” to her surroundings and easing her homesickness.

Bill also sells postcards and matted 8β€³x10β€³ enlargements of landscapes, flowers, and downtown scenes.

TERRA CLOTHA

We will be at the market this week with our usual offering of colorful hand-dyed clothing for adults and children.  However, in two weeks, on Saturday, March 30, Terra Clotha will have a scratch and dent sale.  There aren’t going to be very many scratches, and it’s really hard to dent soft fabric. So these will be metaphorical scratches and dents. We dye a lot of fabric, and we usually get the result that we’re going for.  But sometimes the color is just not right. Often it’s possible to overdye and get an even better color.  But occasionally, the color is a dud and nothing will save it. Or we affix the design crookedly.  Or the silkscreen dye goes into places that it shouldn’t.  Things happen. 

 

So on March 30, these items will be on sale at deep discounts. We’ll have pricing guidelines on that day, but we’re willing to take any reasonable offer.

What is a CSA? CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture. It is a farming model based on developing a direct relationship between farmers and their community. A weekly box of lovely seasonal veggies ( and strawberries!) is the glorious result. This is an opportunity to support a farmer by purchasing in advance the most seasonal and successful crops available while acknowledging that some crops will not always work out with the endless variables at play. The good news is, we grow so many different things you may never notice our secret failings. It's a way for you to directly invest closer into the success and failures of a local farm/ food system.

The CSA box contents will rotate each week as vegetables come in and out of season. You will receive the freshest and best veggies we can provide. We will be sending you a digital newsletter each week telling you what you can expect and ideas on how to use it. The newsletter will be chock full of photos and updates from the farm, as well as rants on whatever happens to be inspiring or bugging us. We grow anything and everything we can, from strawberries and summer squash to greens galore. Please join us or share with anyone who would like to be a part.

THE SPICY HERMIT

This week’s recipe is an idea from my husband. He had a craving for bagels and bought too much cream cheese. He suggested mixing cream cheese with kimchi and making kimchi Rangoons. So I got some kimchi, squeezed as much juice out of it, chopped it roughly, and mixed it with cream cheese with a little pepper and salt, and placed it on square shaped dumpling or egg roll wrappers, and folded it diagonally to make triangles, and air fried it. It was a surprisingly good snack and a good way to use up cream cheese (and kimchi!).  I’m looking forward to trying it again with different kinds of kimchi! https://bit.ly/3wduW8Z

CHAPEL HILL CREAMERY

 We had our first calf born, so that means spring is truly here! We're excited that the  pastures are looking good- one of the positive outcomes of all the rain. We practice rotational grazing Jersey cows so that they can be on pasture (better than standing on concrete) and have good nutrition for the milking herd.

FARMHOUSE CHEESE: Our cheeses this week include Dairyland Farmers, Hot Farmers, Dill Farmers, well-aged Calvander, savory Hickory Grove, Pimento Cheese, and creamy Carolina Moon. 

Enjoy fresh and tangy Farmers cheese in a salad with beets and greens, in enchiladas with spinach, or with sauteed veggies on polenta. Calvander this week is 9 months old which is more than we often age it, so enjoy it as an appetizer or grated for pasta.

    ** FARM NEWS:   

BIG, beautiful heads of organic lettuces, large bundles of swiss chard, beets, and more... all in the solar-powered tunnels.. are so beautiful and tender.  Get them while they are approaching prime. This is probably the LAST week of brussel sprouts.. but the tops will be in plentiful supply the next few weeks.   Yesterday, I made a divine tossed salad with a honey vinaigrette dressing.. and family and friends loved this early spring treat. 

Stock up with meaty bones and make your own nutritious broth during the winter.   Over the weekend, we made homemade broth soup using our wholesome bones and it was so delicious.    Not only for me, but my big white, hard working farm dogs, Sally & George, are now getting the bone broth cooked down from the knuckle marrow bones.   They seem to have more energy and look healthier when I top dress the broth over their kibble.

Mark your calendar for Sunday, May 12th (Mother's Day) for a visit to our farm.  We will be participating in the 3rd Annual Franklin County Women in Ag LOCAL FOODS & FIBER Tour.. with 7 local farms open from 10 a.m. -- 6:00 p.m.  Details will be coming soon on how to participate.  The tour is FREE to the public and you can purchase farm-fresh food and flowers/plants directly at each stop.  Lunch will be available at our farm.

PIEDMONT MICROGREENS

Piedmont Microgreens is an indoor farm located just four miles from the farmer's market! We specialize in microgreens, which are the youngest stage of vegetable crops. Microgreens are great because they're beautiful, tasty, and packed with nutrients. We will be bringing the following microgreens to the market: sunflower shoots, pea shoots, nutrition mix, salad mix, a farmer's choice, and a few specialty varieties, like cilantro, dill, and onion! The nutrition mix is a blend of broccoli, cabbage, and kohlrabi microgreens, while the salad mix is a blend of sunflower shoots, buckwheat, and kale microgreens. The farmer's choice will be a revolving blend of what inspires us each week.

SPECKLED BIRD FARM

Named after the spotted free ranging guinea hens that roam the farm, Speckled Bird Farm is located in the rural community of Timberlake, NC, which is half-way between Roxboro and Durham. Guinea Fowl are voracious insect eaters and are part of the farm’s organic integrated pest management practices. A variety of gourds are grown which are dried, cleaned, drilled and crafted into hand-painted and wood-burned birdhouses. If you are looking for a craft project, their homegrown pre-drilled hanging gourd birdhouses are also available and ready-to-paint.
