PARKING AND STREET INFORMATION

The market is located at 501 Foster Street in The Pavilion at Durham Central Park. 

Parking can be found on the street around the market, in the parking lot on the corner of Hunt and Foster Street (across from Rise Durham and Urban Durham Realty), in the Ballpark Parking Lot on Corporation Street, and in the Measurement Inc. lot, 423 Morris Street (look for the Durham Farmers' Market parking sign). Handicapped parking is available near the corner of Hunt and Foster as detailed in the map above.

There are also public parking lots along Foster Street and on Morgan Street near the Carolina Theatre.

Please note that the Durham Farmers' Market does not allow dogs or other pets in the market area during market hours. Service animals are exempt from this rule. Leashed pets are welcome elsewhere throughout Durham Central Park.

BONLEE GROWN FARM

Hello everyone! While the warm weather is nice and beautiful, this is your reminder to wait until April 15 (weather dependent) before planting outside, as it could still frost  We have a couple plants wanting to bloom (see photos), but we are shipping off the blooms so they can focus on growing big and strong for your gardens. The name β€œserviceberry” itself carries historyβ€”some say it comes from Appalachian folklore, marking the time when the ground thawed enough for burial services, while others trace it to the blooming of the trees signaling spring’s arrival.

BILL POPE PHOTOGRAPHY

Bill Pope was one of the original vendors of the Durham Farmers’ Market in 1999. Bill’s goal is to highlight the beauty of this area, especially Durham. The large, amber gnarled roots of the Red Dawnwood tree at Duke Gardens, the diverse store fronts on Main Street, the old Wrigley mural on Parrish Street, and the deep purple cut irises at the Durham Farmers’ Market have been some of his many subjects. 

Many customers frame Bill’s greeting cards. The cards are also sent around the world. He cherishes an e-mail from a female army officer in Iraq who praised a landscape of Duke Gardens for adding β€œcolor” to her surroundings and easing her homesickness.

Bill also sells postcards and matted 8β€³x10β€³ enlargements of landscapes, flowers, and downtown scenes.

LaKay is a poultry farm located in Louisburg, North Carolina. Dulime and Myrlande are Haitian farmers going back to their roots, growing fresh vegetables and fruits while raising registered Nubian and Nigerian Dwarf goats holistically. They follow regenerative techniques and raise their animals as humanly as possible with no hormones or additives.

You can find them at the market on Saturdays with pasture raised chicken, and eggs by the dozen

We've had three calves born- 2 bulls and 1 heifer; all in the morning which lets us make sure the mother and calf are doing well soon after the calf is born. The calves stand up soon after birth to nurse, and they get the colostrum which boasts their immune systems.

ISAAC’S BAGELS

At Isaac's Bagels, we make bagels the old-fashioned way: by hand.

Isaac began his journey in his home kitchen in 2021, perfecting his bagel recipe through dedication and a lot of spreadsheets. Starting out in a community garden, he shared bagels with friends and neighbors. From there,  Isaac's Bagels quickly gained popularity at the Durham Farmers Market and pop-up events.

Encouraged by his customers, Isaac opened a brick-and-mortar in the heart of Durham in August 2023.

Isaac's Bagels is known for its commitment to quality and tradition. We offer a variety of bagels, spreads, babka, & more at the farmers market, made with great ingredients and great care.

THE SPICY HERMIT

The Spicy Hermit makes delicious varieties of gluten-free, vegan, and preservative-free kimchi, using local produce from neighboring farms (some of them at the market!).  Kimchi is a traditional Korean fermented dish, usually made with cabbages, though we like to experiment and use other seasonal, local vegetables, such as collard greens or kohlrabi.

This week’s recipe comes from CA and is a twist on a CA favorite: Tuna Kimchi Melt with Tomato and Avocado. This sounds like a great lunch or a quick dinner (maybe with a cup of soup). Here’s the recipe: https://bit.ly/4kkd8gP

HARLAND’S CREEK FARM

The Alston-Degraffenried House, a national historic site, is on the farm and was built in 1810. Because of this long history, Harland’s Creek Farm focuses on native and heirloom varieties of plants. Many of the flower bouquets they make could have been in someone’s parlor in the 1800s.

When Judy Lessler first moved there in the 1970’s, kudzu covered the yard and fields and was growing onto the porch of the house. After clearing, she discovered an old fruit and flower garden to the east of the house. In the fall of 2001, she built a parterre on the site of this old garden, using a plan that was inspired by drawings of 18th century gardens. Flowers and decorative shrubs are grown in the parterre. 

Today, Judy, Erasmo and Rene have 5 acres under production and are divided into three plots that have been opened successively over time since 2001. They grow our own transplants. Soil amendments include compost, feather meal, rock phosphate, sulfate of potash, bone meal, lime, or manure. Mulching and cover crops are used to build the soil. Pest management includes 6-8 foot fences to keep deer out, row-covers and flash tape to deter birds and rabbits, and occasionally we use OMRI approved substances for control of pests. Post-harvest handling consists of cold storage in an on farm walk in cooler. Flowers are conditioned using either Vita Products, Inc. or their own on farm mixture using substances that are compliant with the National Organic Program Standards.

As well as selling at the Saturday and Wednesday markets, Harland’s Creek Farm offers a CSA pick-up at each of these locations. These CSAs are operated with other farmers who sell at the Durham Farmers’ Market. Harland’s Creek Farm is certified organic.

BLUEBIRD MEADOWS

Stuart and Alice White love the environment and choose to farm sustainably, with as minimal an impact on the environment as possible. They do not use synthetic fertilizers or chemicals. Instead, they use lots of compost (worm castings are considered β€˜black gold’ among farming enthusiasts), leaf mulch, and cover crops to keep their soil healthy and their biodiversity up. They also hope to incorporate aspects of permaculture on their farm, creating a healthy, closed system with as little outsourcing for material and soil amendments as possible.

We look forward to welcoming you to our annual Sheep Shearing Day here on the farm. 

The wool sheared at this event is what we use to create our products through the year to follow. 

Our guest of honor, renowned hand shearer, Kevin Ford, is certainly worth coming out to watch, as he demonstrates the near extinct skill of blade shearing. 

There will be live music, food, a fiber circle, great items in our farm store, and the perfect backdrop to wonderful and educational memories to be made with family and friends.
