PARKING AND STREET INFORMATION

The market is located at 501 Foster Street in The Pavilion at Durham Central Park. 

Parking can be found on the street around the market, in the parking lot on the corner of Hunt and Foster Street (across from Rise Durham and Urban Durham Realty), in the Ballpark Parking Lot on Corporation Street, and in the Measurement Inc. lot, 423 Morris Street (look for the Durham Farmers' Market parking sign). Handicapped parking is available near the corner of Hunt and Foster as detailed in the map above.

There are also public parking lots along Foster Street and on Morgan Street near the Carolina Theatre. 

ANIMAL POLICY

Please note that the Durham Farmers' Market does not allow dogs or other pets in the market area during market hours. Service animals are exempt from this rule. Leashed pets are welcome elsewhere throughout Durham Central Park.

We make inspired vegetarian soups using NC-grown produce. Our flavors rotate weekly. Check out our new SPICY CARROT TOMATO soup on this week's menu -- The heat (though not overwhelming) in this pureed soup comes from togarashi, a Japanese spice mix of orange peel, black sesame seeds, seaweed, Japanese pepper and ginger. Sake helps build depth of flavor and coconut milk adds both heft and a little creaminess.  Come by for a sample!

STONEY MOUNTAIN FARM

Stoney Mountain Farm raises their lambs the old fashioned way, allowing their sheep to graze open pastures. They are passionate about animal welfare and sustainability, and strive to be good stewards of the land. Their grazing system helps to keep the sheep on fresh grass year-round while helping to keep the soil healthy. 

Olga and John raise Navajo Churro sheep, which Slow Food named to it’s Ark of Taste based on the valuable traits of the breed. Navajo Churro genetics are smaller framed yet produce tender, lean, distinctive sweet flavored meat. The breed is endangered because they won’t meet the demands of commodity meats. They also raise Dorset and Corriedale sheep. They are proud to offer quality products from healthy, happy sheep.

SPECKLED BIRD FARM

Named after the spotted free ranging guinea hens that roam the farm, Speckled Bird Farm is located in the rural community of Timberlake, NC, which is half-way between Roxboro and Durham. Guinea Fowl are voracious insect eaters and are part of the farm’s organic integrated pest management practices. A variety of gourds are grown which are dried, cleaned, drilled and crafted into hand-painted and wood-burned birdhouses. If you are looking for a craft project, their homegrown pre-drilled hanging gourd birdhouses are also available and ready-to-paint.

CHAPEL HILL CREAMERY

FARMHOUSE CHEESE: Our cheeses this week include well-aged Calvander, Hickory Grove, Carolina Moon, New Moon, Dairyland Farmers cheese, and Hot Farmers. Each cheese is distinctive so ask for serving or cooking suggestions; we will also have some of our pimento cheese. They are listed above from most aged to the freshest and unaged. Aging plays a role in the texture and the flavor, and is an important part of each recipe. The aged cheeses are flipped and monitored in the aging room until they are ready to wrap and sell. The Hickory Grove is a washed rind cheese and is lightly washed with a certain culture and salt brine to enhance its unique rind and flavor. Carolina Moon is similar to a Camembert and it becomes softer with rich flavors as it ages; since it is a round wheel it gets soft on the outer edges and then ripens toward the center. We can help you pick a mild wheel or one that is more developed; it's perfect for an appetizer. New Moon is a button size and is sold while it is very young with light,milky flavors. 

   Serve our cheese at room temperature for the most flavor. Enjoy with crackers or bread, a bowl of soup, or your favorite recipe. The cows in the picture are getting some hay and grain after milking before they go out to pasture. We love our Jerseys with the soulful eyes.

    ** FARM NEWS:   

With the milder weather this week, Mario and his family continue to plant, plant, plant.. tender plants of organic lettuces, swiss chard, beets, and more... all in the solar-powered tunnels.   Brussel sprouts and collards are still growing outside and both look good. 

Stock up with meaty bones and make your own nutritious broth during the winter.   Over the weekend, we made homemade broth soup using our wholesome bones and it was so delicious.    Not only for me, but my big white, hard working farm dogs, Sally & George, are now getting the bone broth cooked down from the knuckle marrow bones.   They seem to have more energy and look healthier when I top dress the broth over their kibble.

Mark your calendar for Sunday, May 12th (Mother's Day) for a visit to our farm.  We will be participating in the 3rd Annual Franklin County Women in Ag LOCAL FOODS & FIBER Tour.. with 7 local farms open from 10 a.m. -- 6:00 p.m.  Details will be coming soon on how to participate.  The tour is FREE to the public and you can purchase farm-fresh food and flowers/plants directly at each stop.  Lunch will be available at our farm.
