LIL’ FARM

Good Day to you from Lil' Farm. For Saturday we will have a fully loaded booth of Summer foods! - 46 varieties of field, organically grown Heirloom Tomatoes, Mixed Cherry Tomatoes, Sungolds, Baby Romas, Shishito Peppers, Banana Peppers, Pablanos, Bell Peppers, Water Spinach, Lettuce, Okra, Basil, Big Basil Bundles for Pesto making, Papalo, Tulsi Basil, Fresh Celery and more. Come check out the bounty and get some delicious tomatoes. At Lil' Farm the Flat River is as high as we have seen it, but the farm was very lucky and we got less than 4 inches of Rain. We know so many of our Market's farms got tons of rain and we hope everyone is safe and the fields are recovering. Thanks so much for coming to the Market and caring about local foods and farmers!

LAKAY FARM

LaKay is a poultry farm located in Louisburg, North Carolina. Dulime and Myrlande are Haitian farmers going back to their roots, growing fresh vegetables and fruits while raising registered Nubian and Nigerian Dwarf goats holistically. They follow regenerative techniques and raise their animals as humanly as possible with no hormones or additives.

You can find them at the market on Saturdays with pasture-raised chicken & colorful eggs by the dozen.

Grilling Season

Lamb is often considered the traditional meat across countries, cultures and cuisines when thinking about kabobs. We often think of traditional Middle Eastern, Indian, and Irish dishes that feature Lamb, but one of the best ways for Lamb to shine is on the grill... such as kabobs. So many flavor profiles to consider! How are you planning on making your lamb kabobs this week?

Of course we are partial knowing that our lamb is lovingly raised on a chemical-free, sustainable farm and humanely processed. Lamb is considered a super food, being a rich source of nutrients, essential vitamins, minerals and protein , but we also have to acknowledge that is the perfect protein for bold flavors.

CHAPEL HILL CREAMERY

The rain was scary but we did OK and are happy we have a generator to power the creamery building and the refrigeration. The weather looks great for the market Saturday. Use our cheese for delicious meals or for an appetizer. We are happy to make suggestions. Alexa is packing Mozzarella in the picture and that cheese is definitely a team effort.

Cheeses Saturday are Fresh Mozzarella, fresh Dairyland Farmers, savory Hickory Grove, pungent Danziger, Carolina Moon (like a Camembert), New Moon buttons, Pheta, and aged Calvander, similar to an Asiago, plus Hot and Dill Farmers.

BONLEE GROWN FARM

Blueberry season is here! We’ll have blueberry jam and blueberries this week, as the season requires. We also found some rhubarb, so we’ll have strawberry rhubarb jam at market, and Amy decided to try some mandarin jam, which is now a favorite in the Sugg household! There are also all the pickles that Amy’s been making: squash pickles, bread & butter pickles, sweet crunchy pickles, kosher dill pickles, and more!

Our geraniums are now on sale! $5 for a 6.5” pot and $15 for a hanging basket. All flowering hanging baskets are $15 now, so you can get your shade-lovin’ impatiens on sale, too.  There are still perennials, such as purple coneflower, purple Homestead verbena, and mountain mint. It’s never too late to beautify your containers and gardens!

Several customers admiring my berry bowls requested larger berry bowls. 

I took the first step of throwing, trimming, and punching holes this week. 

Now to let them dry while campers and I make enough pieces to fill the kiln. 

Then to wait for a break in the weather to glaze and fire. 

Could easily take me until this fall to complete the steps. 

Since it takes a while, let me know if I should make more!

I’ve also begun a new batch of butter bells, including small ones to hold a half a stick for my modest butter-eating fans. :-)

THE SPICY HERMIT

The Spicy Hermit makes delicious varieties of gluten-free, vegan, and preservative-free kimchi, using local produce from neighboring farms (some of them at the market!).  Kimchi is a traditional Korean fermented dish, usually made with cabbages, though we like to experiment and use other seasonal, local vegetables, such as collard greens or kohlrabi.

We will have Pain Remedy back in stock this week, finally. This blend of analgesic nervine and anti-inflammatory herbs is a natural alternative to over-the-counter pain relievers. It’s formulated to ease both the pain and inflammation of acute injuries.

We were out of one of the ingredients, wild lettuce, for the longest time and have finally made a new batch of double extracted wild lettuce to add to Pain Remedy. For this extract we harvested pre-flowering above-ground parts of wild lettuce, tinctured fresh in Organic cane alcohol, strained out the plant material, and then added another round of fresh flowering wild lettuce, macerated longer and pressed the extract. It’s strong!

HARLAND’S CREEK FARM

The Alston-Degraffenried House, a national historic site, is on the farm and was built in 1810. Because of this long history, Harland’s Creek Farm focuses on native and heirloom varieties of plants. Many of the flower bouquets they make could have been in someone’s parlor in the 1800s.

When Judy Lessler first moved there in the 1970’s, kudzu covered the yard and fields and was growing onto the porch of the house. After clearing, she discovered an old fruit and flower garden to the east of the house. In the fall of 2001, she built a parterre on the site of this old garden, using a plan that was inspired by drawings of 18th century gardens. Flowers and decorative shrubs are grown in the parterre. 

Today, Judy, Erasmo and Rene have 5 acres under production and are divided into three plots that have been opened successively over time since 2001. They grow our own transplants. Soil amendments include compost, feather meal, rock phosphate, sulfate of potash, bone meal, lime, or manure. Mulching and cover crops are used to build the soil. Pest management includes 6-8 foot fences to keep deer out, row-covers and flash tape to deter birds and rabbits, and occasionally we use OMRI approved substances for control of pests. Post-harvest handling consists of cold storage in an on farm walk in cooler. Flowers are conditioned using either Vita Products, Inc. or their own on farm mixture using substances that are compliant with the National Organic Program Standards.

As well as selling at the Saturday and Wednesday markets, Harland’s Creek Farm offers a CSA pick-up at each of these locations. These CSAs are operated with other farmers who sell at the Durham Farmers’ Market. Harland’s Creek Farm is certified organic.

JEWELS OF HEALTH FARM

Jewels of Health Farm, owned by Julius Griffin, is a 180 acre farm in Louisburg, N.C. His main crop is heirloom watermelons, including white, yellow, orange, red, and pink varieties, as well as heirloom tomatoes, herbs, and ginger. He uses all parts of the fruit except the outer skin to create delicious and healthy cold pressed juices.

WILD SCALLIONS FARM

It’s all about good healthful food, and beautiful local flowers sustainably grown in a balanced farm ecosystem. Matt and Renee love to grow, cook and eat good food. And since 2004, they have had the pleasure of sharing those passions at the Durham Farmers’ Market. Wild Scallions Farm is located in southern Person County near the top of Mount Tirzah. Their 50 acre farm includes two acres of cultivated vegetable and flower plots, several berry patches, a small orchard, pasture raised laying hens, bees and dairy goats. Matt and Renee grow an abundant mix of blooms March through December.

Bill Pope was one of the original vendors of the Durham Farmers’ Market in 1999. Bill’s goal is to highlight the beauty of this area, especially Durham. The large, amber gnarled roots of the Red Dawnwood tree at Duke Gardens, the diverse store fronts on Main Street, the old Wrigley mural on Parrish Street, and the deep purple cut irises at the Durham Farmers’ Market have been some of his many subjects. 

Many customers frame Bill’s greeting cards. The cards are also sent around the world. He cherishes an e-mail from a female army officer in Iraq who praised a landscape of Duke Gardens for adding “color” to her surroundings and easing her homesickness.

Bill also sells postcards and matted 8″x10″ enlargements of landscapes, flowers, and downtown scenes.

MU TA KA PAW GARDEN

Since childhood, Tri Sa has been passionate about growing produce and flowers. After fleeing war-torn Burma, she relocated to Chapel Hill in 2007 to build a new life.

Two years later, her passion for farming was reignited when she joined Transplanting Traditions, a community farm that helps migrant refugees from the Thailand-Burma border adopt a pesticide-free farming approach.

Since 2009, the family-owned Mu Ta Ka Paw Garden has been serving the local community at the Chapel Hill Farmers’ Market and the Carrboro Farmers’ Market, offering a CSA pick-up at both locations.

Mu Ta Ka Paw Garden currently cultivates flowers and grows a variety of vegetables, including Asian greens such as fresh ginger, bitter melon, bok choy, yu choy, gai lan, and water spinach (morning glory), among others.

Now is the prime time to enjoy fresh, local meats and produce.  Mario and his helpers are working hard every single day to grow the best, healthiest food for you.   We are fortunate to have several weeks of regular rains and I hope they continue.  Being organic, we have LOTS and lots of weeds that must be hand-weeded (no sprays).  The watermelons and sweet potatoes are really looking good and the vines are running now.   Succession summer plantings are also taking place with other crops being planted both inside the shaded tunnels and outside in the fields.

RABBIT PATCH BASKETS

Eva Green is a fourth generation basket weaver. Eva was skillfully taught the art of basket weaving by her mother, Nadine Degraffenreaidt.

Hand weaving baskets is Eva’s biggest passion.  She really enjoys making intricate baskets. Weaving baskets with designs that are difficult to achieve provides a rewarding challenge for her. Eva uses berries, nuts, flowers, vegetables, and anything that will make a stain to dye the reed for her baskets. 

She has been awarded numerous ribbons for baskets and teaches locally at different community colleges.

Abanitu Organics is owned and operated by Bernard Obie. The farm, located in Roxboro, is 32 acres of mostly woodlands, pasture and meadows, with about 5 acres under cultivation. Obie, a fifth generation farmer, is committed to building a healthy farm eco-system using a no-till approach on re-mineralized, naturally enriched soil. Abanitu Farms is a certified organic farm. TERRA CLOTHA

I created this design from a story my wife Annamarie told me about growing up in East Tennessee. For a couple of summers during her childhood, the kids of her town participated in a scientific study. They gathered fireflies for scientists who planned to use them in medical research. Each evening, just after twilight, she and her friends would go out with their nets and find as many fireflies as they could, and then transfer them to large canning jars. Once a week, the scientists would meet the children at the school parking lot, weigh the insects they had caught, and pay them accordingly. One month, Annamarie was recognized as the second-best firefly catcher in Anderson County, Tennessee. Her name was in the paper and everything. To recreate the firefly design, I dyed the garment yellow, then dropped warm wax onto it. When it was overdyed blue, and the wax removed, I had a green garment with a bunch of firefly “glows.” The jar was silkscreened on some garments, batiked on others. The insects were added by rubberstamping the final product.

Capritopia Farm a family run farm with 2.5 acres in vegetable production, Alpine Dairy Goats, and chickens for fresh eggs. They also have fruit trees, grapevines, and young pecan trees on the farm. Capritopia Farm specializes in growing ginger and turmeric.

Following time-honored French farmstead techniques, Celebrity Dairy transforms goat’s milk into fresh goat cheese, or chèvre. Simply put, Celebrity Dairy’s chèvre is an honest expression of owners Brit and Flemming, of their farm, and of their place in time.

Like many specialty farm products, their cheese is fragile, and suffers from the abuses of shipping. They honor their cheese’s distinctive qualities by selling locally, thereby allowing them to hand deliver directly to their customers at local farmers’ markets, area restaurants that proudly feature it on their menus, and select local grocery stores.

None of this occurs in a vacuum: Celebrity Dairy is an integral part of Chatham County’s vigorous and growing low impact, sustainable agriculture community that produces high quality seasonal farm products in and for the Piedmont region. Kalawi Farms is bringing fresh peaches this week & homemade peach ice cream!

Kalawi Farms offers a rotational variety of different peach types including cling and freestones.

About the farm: In 1982, Art and Jan Williams started their peach orchard on family land in Eagle Springs, NC. They grow about 5,000 peach trees on thirty acres, as well as row crops and produce, which also is for sale. Their 35 varieties of peaches are harvested through mid-September. In addition to peaches, Kalawi Farms has homemade peach and strawberry ice cream!
