PARKING AND STREET INFORMATION The market is located at 501 Foster Street in The Pavilion at Durham Central Park. Parking can be found on the street around the market, in the parking lot on the corner of Hunt and Foster Street (across from Rise Durham and Urban Durham Realty), in the Ballpark Parking Lot on Corporation Street, and in the Measurement Inc. lot, 423 Morris Street (look for the Durham Farmers' Market parking sign). Handicapped parking is available near the corner of Hunt and Foster as detailed in the map above. There are also public parking lots along Foster Street and on Morgan Street near the Carolina Theatre. ANIMAL POLICY Please note that the Durham Farmers' Market does not allow dogs or other pets in the market area during market hours. Service animals are exempt from this rule. TERRA CLOTHA If you glanced over at our booth on a typical market Saturday morning, you may have casually remarked something like, “Oh, look at the tie-dyed shirts.” We appreciate that. But here’s a little secret: Our shirts are only very rarely tie-dyed. Oh, they’re dyed, of course. But we very rarely tie. Instead, we get our color variations by manipulating the dye chemistry and crumpling up the garments as we toss them into a dye bath. Not the same thing as tie-dyeing at all. (However, you are welcome to continue to refer to them as “tie-dyed,” and we won’t complain.) Most of the time, we decorate our shirts with silkscreened designs, appliques, or a batik process. But recently, we have been selling our shirts naked, which is to say, they don’t have a design on them; we let the color speak for itself. Not all colors are available in all sizes. LIL’ FARM Hello Vegetable Eaters, Happy Solstice, New Year and all the many things celebrated this time of the year. Lil' Farm is a comin' to market as usual with Kales, Chard, Escarole, Cilantro, Turmeric and other winter green delights. In this sad time of world happenings, we continue to be so grateful for our community and our healthy food. It can feel hard to be thinking about commerce or eating future food, or prepping land often these days, so thanks for being the reason we do it. It’s time for us to share our 2024 CSA sign up info and for y’all to join us for a fresh, colorful, nutritious future bounty. This year the CSA will run April 3rd through June 26th (13 weeks). Like last year, we are offering a Home Delivery option and 2 pick up sites in Durham (West Durham and South Durham).Go to www.lilfarm.com, -go into the shop- then choose either the home delivery or one of the pick up options, depending on what you’d like. What is a CSA? CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture. It is a farming model based on developing a direct relationship between farmers and their community. A weekly box of lovely seasonal veggies ( and strawberries!) is the glorious result. This is an opportunity to support a farmer by purchasing in advance the most seasonal and successful crops available while acknowledging that some crops will not always work out with the endless variables at play. The good news is, we grow so many different things you may never notice our secret failings. It's a way for you to directly invest closer into the success and failures of a local farm/ food system. The CSA box contents will rotate each week as vegetables come in and out of season. You will receive the freshest and best veggies we can provide. We will be sending you a digital newsletter each week telling you what you can expect and ideas on how to use it. The newsletter will be chock full of photos and updates from the farm, as well as rants on whatever happens to be inspiring or bugging us. STONEY MOUNTAIN FARM Stoney Mountain Farm raises their lambs the old fashioned way, allowing their sheep to graze open pastures. They are passionate about animal welfare and sustainability, and strive to be good stewards of the land. Olga and John raise Navajo Churro sheep, which Slow Food named to it’s Ark of Taste based on the valuable traits of the breed. Navajo Churro genetics are smaller framed yet produce tender, lean, distinctive sweet flavored meat. The breed is endangered because they won’t meet the demands of commodity meats. Many beautiful vegetables are growing inside the solar-powered high tunnel greenhouses... Sungold tomatoes, kales, and more. However, Mario has been carefully looking after the large outside organic field of BRUSSEL Sprouts. They are looking great and Mario is harvesting them every week. Collard plants also look good in their sections of the organic fields. The organic potatoes have been cured and will be coming in boxes to the Market, 10 lb . or 20 lb. boxes. Fresh pastured PORK from a downeast USDA processor has made our eastern-style "heat & serve" barbeque... so delicious and a quick meal. It is wonderful! Stock up with meaty bones and make your own nutritious broth during the winter. Over the weekend, we made homemade broth soup using our wholesome bones and it was so delicious. Not only for me, but my big white, hard working farm dogs, Sally & George, are now getting the bone broth cooked down from the knuckle marrow bones. They seem to have more energy and look healthier when I top dress the broth over their kibble. CHAPEL HILL CREAMERY FARMHOUSE CHEESE: Hickory Grove, our washed-rind cheese is pictured above; it is a semi firm washed cheese that makes a fabulous grilled cheese sandwich. Pair that with your favorite soup and you have a delicious meal. Cheeses this week include well-aged Calvander, Dairyland Farmers cheese, Hot Farmers, Dill Farmers, Carolina Moon, New Moon, and probably some Pimento cheese. WHEY FED PORK: We have pork bones for making stock and some sausages including Smoked Andouille and Chorizo. Chorizo is full of flavor and not too spicy, perfect for a burrito or with hash browns. PASTURED BEEF: Our herd is Animal Welfare Approved and we practice rotational grazing at our farm. We have various soup bones and some marrow bones for stock.
