FRUCHTENICHT HONEY

The pollen that bees collect represents the male gamete of the plant and is usually about 25% protein although there is much variation among the many species honey bees visit. Fueled by pollen as its food the larvae grow at a tremendous rate. A baby growing at the rate attained by a well-fed honey bee larva would weigh two tons in a week. So how about pollen as human food. 

The idea that the hard coat makes pollen indigestible has been refuted. The grains take up water in a moist environment and explode. There are many claims for pollen’s possible nutritional benefits. Pollen contains a large array of vitamins and minerals, lacking only B and D. Some athletes eat it claiming enhanced abilities. Large amounts are used in the diets of race horses. Clinical trials show a benefit in relieving prostatitis, and while there are no proven claims regarding cancer, studies have shown consuming it can ease the side effects of radiation treatments. Studies have shown only a weak impact on relieving hay fever symptoms but ingestion doesn’t trigger allergic reactions, and in any case, unlike some other allergies like peanuts, pollen allergies never cause extreme reactions like anaphylaxis. Eating large amounts can cause indigestion though.

The chilly season has arrived, and so it’s time to start thinking about the holidays! We have lots of jams, jellies, pickles, & relishes to bring to the dinner table and as gifts for loved ones. LAKAY FARM

LaKay is a poultry farm located in Louisburg, North Carolina. Dulime and Myrlande are Haitian farmers going back to their roots, growing fresh vegetables and fruits while raising registered Nubian and Nigerian Dwarf goats holistically. They follow regenerative techniques and raise their animals as humanly as possible with no hormones or additives.

You can find them at the market on Saturdays with pasture raised chicken, and eggs by the dozen

FARMHOUSE CHEESE: We have our Holiday Moons which make wonderful hostess gifts, as well as our popular Carolina Moon on its own. Other cheeses include well -aged Calvander, Dairyland Farmers cheese, Hot Farmers, Dill Farmers, and Hickory Grove, our washed-rind cheese. We have a few pimento cheese as well. Mix 2 or 3 for a cheese board for appetizers. Our Jersey cows are pasture raised and produce rich, flavorful milk.

WHEY FED PORK: We have sausages and smoked ham hocks for your New Year’s meal. Polish sausage, Chorizo, and Smoked Andouille are made with the hams for a meaty texture, and they're perfect to have in the freezer for a quick meal.

Joyful cycles, circles, and spirals intertwine through my life and work. 

Sometimes when I set up at market the sun sparkles off my glazes just so. 

With my camera, I chase the colors through the glare.

I cut, paste, upload, edit into repeat mirrored pattern, press a few more buttons in our magic machines and soon a fabric arrives at my doorstep. 

More cutting, sewing, turning, lining to create a potholder. 

I reload the van, circular wheels roll me and my wares to market. 

I repeat the cycle to set up my tables and wares. 

The sun shines again. 

My camera and eye scan the table, discovering the juxtaposition of the fabric and the glazed pot.

And now, you too can have potholders that match your bowls.

Piedmont Microgreens is an indoor farm located just four miles from the farmer's market! We specialize in microgreens, which are the youngest stage of vegetable crops. Microgreens are great because they're beautiful, tasty, and packed with nutrients. STONEY MOUNTAIN FARM

Stoney Mountain Farm raises their lambs the old fashioned way, allowing their sheep to graze open pastures. They are passionate about animal welfare and sustainability, and strive to be good stewards of the land. Their grazing system helps to keep the sheep on fresh grass year-round while helping to keep the soil healthy. 

Olga and John raise Navajo Churro sheep, which Slow Food named to it’s Ark of Taste based on the valuable traits of the breed. Navajo Churro genetics are smaller framed yet produce tender, lean, distinctive sweet flavored meat. The breed is endangered because they won’t meet the demands of commodity meats. They also raise Dorset and Corriedale sheep. They are proud to offer quality products from healthy, happy sheep.
