During April and May, the Franklin County Center will be offering our new Small Farm Boot Camp program including a farm tour, which is designed for new and beginning farmers, market gardeners and homesteaders, to help them increase knowledge and skills in local food production, and to celebrate and build fellowship with other area new farmers.

Designed for new and beginning farmers, market gardeners, and homesteaders, the series begins in April – May, 2025. Each session will begin at 4:00 p.m. The cost for the four-part series is $150 per participant. Dinner will be served during each evening session. TERRA CLOTHA

This week, Terra Clotha will have a scratch and dent sale.  

There aren’t going to be very many scratches, and it’s really hard to dent soft fabric. So these will be metaphorical scratches and dents. We dye a lot of fabric, and we usually get the result that we’re going for.  But sometimes the color is just not right. Often it’s possible to over-dye and get an even better color.  But occasionally, the color is a dud and nothing will save it. Or we affix the design crookedly.  Or the silkscreen dye goes into places that it shouldn’t.  Things happen.  

For adult T-shirts (usually $25), at this sale, we’re asking $10. For kids’ T-shirts (usually $20), at this sale, we’re asking $5. Or make us an offer we can’t refuse. We'll have some hats. totes, and scarves as well. Each one of a kind, all sales final, etc., etc.

PLEASE NOTE: This sale does not apply to everything at our booth. We will still have some of our regular stock, and the scratch-and-dent sale will end when we run out of sale items. The early bird get the (metaphorical) worm.

A family farm for over 200 years, Sunset Ridge Buffalo Farm has been raising buffalo/bison since 2001. HARLAND’S CREEK FARM

The Alston-Degraffenried House, a national historic site, is on the farm and was built in 1810. Because of this long history, Harland’s Creek Farm focuses on native and heirloom varieties of plants. Many of the flower bouquets they make could have been in someone’s parlor in the 1800s.

When Judy Lessler first moved there in the 1970’s, kudzu covered the yard and fields and was growing onto the porch of the house. After clearing, she discovered an old fruit and flower garden to the east of the house. In the fall of 2001, she built a parterre on the site of this old garden, using a plan that was inspired by drawings of 18th century gardens. Flowers and decorative shrubs are grown in the parterre. 

Today, Judy, Erasmo and Rene have 5 acres under production and are divided into three plots that have been opened successively over time since 2001. They grow our own transplants. Soil amendments include compost, feather meal, rock phosphate, sulfate of potash, bone meal, lime, or manure. Mulching and cover crops are used to build the soil. Pest management includes 6-8 foot fences to keep deer out, row-covers and flash tape to deter birds and rabbits, and occasionally we use OMRI approved substances for control of pests. Post-harvest handling consists of cold storage in an on farm walk in cooler. Flowers are conditioned using either Vita Products, Inc. or their own on farm mixture using substances that are compliant with the National Organic Program Standards.

As well as selling at the Saturday and Wednesday markets, Harland’s Creek Farm offers a CSA pick-up at each of these locations. These CSAs are operated with other farmers who sell at the Durham Farmers’ Market. Harland’s Creek Farm is certified organic.

ISAAC’S BAGELS

At Isaac's Bagels, we make bagels the old-fashioned way: by hand.

Isaac began his journey in his home kitchen in 2021, perfecting his bagel recipe through dedication and a lot of spreadsheets. Starting out in a community garden, he shared bagels with friends and neighbors. From there,  Isaac's Bagels quickly gained popularity at the Durham Farmers Market and pop-up events.

Encouraged by his customers, Isaac opened a brick-and-mortar in the heart of Durham in August 2023.

Isaac's Bagels is known for its commitment to quality and tradition. We offer a variety of bagels, spreads, babka, & more at the farmers market, made with great ingredients and great care.

STONEY MOUNTAIN FARM

Our laundry Fragrance line, specific to our wool dryer balls, has been a long time in the discovery process. We weren't going to offer a chemically derived fragrance, and I hesitated offering essential oils because the need to frequently reapply makes them expensive to use. After a long search I am finally able to bring you a 100% natural scent, derived from essential oils, that lasts with the help of a special distillation process.

Our lemon scent is bright citrus. Just enough to put that smile on your face and an extra skip in your step.

Our Fleur de Fruit scent is also bright but has an added floral element and a bit of cardamom to give a wee bit of spice. I love it!

Two or three drops on each ball should last several loads.

The beautiful tender crops inside the greenhouses are thriving in the warm weather.   Mario is working so hard to get the animals fed and watered every day in addition to planting cool season vegetables... such as baby arugula, lettuce heads, beets, and much more.    Mario's helpers are working on helping the asparagus field "wake up" from the long winter season along with spending time in the blueberry and strawberry fields.

Lyon Farms is registered in North Carolina as a “Century Farm” and it has been in Mark Lyon’s family since 1861. We provide a wide assortment of quality fruits and vegetables.

CHAPEL HILL CREAMERY

At my house we try to eat whole foods and this includes a balance of lots of veggies and protein. Cheese figures in regularly which is why we mention the ways to cook with our different cheeses. Lately I've made a frittata with grated Calvander, an egg and Hickory Grove roll up in a tortilla for breakfast, dill farmers in a ham sandwich, Farmers in tacos, pheta with beets, and Mozzarella melted in a tomato pasta bake. We add some meat, beans, or nuts some of the time, and eat tofu for a change of scene. I hope you enjoy the wonderful items at the market and keep some cheese on hand to liven up your meals.      

We have 7 1/2-month aged Calvander  Carolina Moon (like a Camembert), savory Hickory Grove, a few New Moon, Dairyland Farmers, Hot Farmers, pHeta (our cow's milk feta) and a little Mozzarella from last week. Our picture shows Justin and Jackson flipping and re-dressing the large wheels of Calvander on the day it was made.

Haw River Mushrooms, LLC is a family owned mushroom farm based in Saxapahaw, NC. We produce fresh gourmet mushrooms for wholesale, market, and CSA. Hello everyone! We are excited now that spring is here! We will be bringing more plants this Saturday as the weather continues to warm up and stay warm: tuberous begonias, rosebud impatiens, wave petunias, geranium hanging baskets, and more. These will brighten up your home until the weather is consistent enough to put them outside. Come get the first ones of the season!

FULL FLOWER HERBS

It is truly feeling like spring, a welcome time with lots of sweet flowers and juicy tendrils popping up around our medicine garden. Yay!

SPRING CLEANSING

This week we’re highlighting some of our favorite “spring cleansing” tinctures and tonics, for those looking to give their systems a little help adjusting to the change in season.

A simple and effective addition to your medicine cabinet is Happy Liver, Clear Skin. In this formula, yellow dock, burdock, dandelion, calendula, and cleavers support blood cleansing via the liver and lymph, and diuretic cleavers and dandelion encourage the release of toxins through the urine. Great for your liver function, and also your skin.

A potent way to support your body is to work more deeply with a single herb. Some that we recommend for spring-cleansing are:

Cleavers A blood-cleansing tonic, useful with swollen glands, UTIs, and skin conditions.

Stinging nettle For supporting healthy elimination via the kidneys/urination.

Burdock A gentle liver tonic that gradually cleanses skin from the inside out.

Dandelion Another great liver tonic and diuretic.

Violet A helpful tool in lymphatic cleansing.
