HARLAND’S CREEK FARM

The Alston-Degraffenried House, a national historic site, is on the farm and was built in 1810. Because of this long history, Harland’s Creek Farm focuses on native and heirloom varieties of plants. Many of the flower bouquets they make could have been in someone’s parlor in the 1800s.

When Judy Lessler first moved there in the 1970’s, kudzu covered the yard and fields and was growing onto the porch of the house. After clearing, she discovered an old fruit and flower garden to the east of the house. In the fall of 2001, she built a parterre on the site of this old garden, using a plan that was inspired by drawings of 18th century gardens. Flowers and decorative shrubs are grown in the parterre. 

Today, Judy, Erasmo and Rene have 5 acres under production and are divided into three plots that have been opened successively over time since 2001. They grow our own transplants. Soil amendments include compost, feather meal, rock phosphate, sulfate of potash, bone meal, lime, or manure. Mulching and cover crops are used to build the soil. Pest management includes 6-8 foot fences to keep deer out, row-covers and flash tape to deter birds and rabbits, and occasionally we use OMRI approved substances for control of pests. Post-harvest handling consists of cold storage in an on farm walk in cooler. Flowers are conditioned using either Vita Products, Inc. or their own on farm mixture using substances that are compliant with the National Organic Program Standards.

As well as selling at the Saturday and Wednesday markets, Harland’s Creek Farm offers a CSA pick-up at each of these locations. These CSAs are operated with other farmers who sell at the Durham Farmers’ Market. Harland’s Creek Farm is certified organic.

SPECKLED BIRD

Speckled Bird Farm is located in the rural northern part of Durham county. The farm has been a proud member of the Durham Farmers Market since 2006, and is currently selling farm and nature related crafts, plants and cut flowers. Come check out our painted Gourd birdhouses, or take home a pre-drilled one to paint yourself.

HURTGEN MEADOWS

This Wednesday and Saturday we will have plants for your home gardens.  Some varieties may be limited. Please bring containers to bring them home.  Plants include cherry tomatoes, mid-size and large tomatoes, both hybrid and heirloom, sweet bell peppers, hot and spicy peppers, cucumbers, eggplant, herbs and lots of flowers.  Tomato plants will be specially priced.

Produce available includes peas, lettuce, kale, chard, turnips, onions, garlic and jam. 

We are sending out a call for your empty paper egg cartons, and we will happily accept returns of your glass jam jars and rings. Thank you!

LOCALS SEAFOOD

Locals Seafood started with a single item for sale: the humble shrimp. In 2010, college buddies Lin & Ryan began selling Stumpy Point shrimp out of a tailgate cooler on the side of the road in Raleigh, North Carolina. The story starts a bit earlier, though.

Ryan was living in the Outer Banks a few years before that tailgate cooler. His fishermen friends would bring over freshly caught fish every night. They would feast on pan-seared sheepshead, crispy soft-shell crabs, and boiled shrimp. Having spent much of his life in the NC piedmont, Ryan wondered why folks further inland didn’t have better access to this resource. After moving back inland himself, he called his buddy Lin with an idea. Could they bring this fresh product to Triangle chefs, grocery stores, and consumers? Would these folks want to eat fish like monkfish, mullet, and mackerel?

The answer was a resounding yes. Locals Seafood is still dedicated to that original idea today. Our crew drives to the coast 4 to 5 times a week to buy super fresh premium seafood straight from the source. We bring this product back to Raleigh, where we cut, pack, and sell it through various channels. Whether it be straight to restaurants, through farmers markets or at our namesake restaurant, you are guaranteed to get the freshest product always.

MU TA KA PAW GARDEN

Since childhood, Tri Sa has been passionate about growing produce and flowers. After fleeing war-torn Burma, she relocated to Chapel Hill in 2007 to build a new life.

Two years later, her passion for farming was reignited when she joined Transplanting Traditions, a community farm that helps migrant refugees from the Thailand-Burma border adopt a pesticide-free farming approach.

Since 2009, the family-owned Mu Ta Ka Paw Garden has been serving the local community at local farmers markets, offering a CSA pick-ups.

Mu Ta Ka Paw Garden currently cultivates flowers and grows a variety of vegetables, including Asian greens such as fresh ginger, bitter melon, bok choy, yu choy, gai lan, and water spinach (morning glory), among others.
