During April and May, the Franklin County Center will be offering our new Small Farm Boot Camp program including a farm tour, which is designed for new and beginning farmers, market gardeners and homesteaders, to help them increase knowledge and skills in local food production, and to celebrate and build fellowship with other area new farmers.

Designed for new and beginning farmers, market gardeners, and homesteaders, the series begins in April – May, 2025. Each session will begin at 4:00 p.m. The cost for the four-part series is $150 per participant. Dinner will be served during each evening session. This is a picture of our herd manager Elin Arnaudin. She grew up in N.C. and got degrees at N.C. State and Virginia Tech. She came here with her husband who she met in New Zealand where she took a job and stayed for 12 years. We are fortunate to have such a smart and capable person here!

We have plenty of cheeses this week, and each one is distinctive with its own recipe. From Dairyland Farmers, made each week, to a well aged Calvander (like an Asiago). We also have Pheta, savory Hickory Grove, Carolina Moon (like a Camembert), New Moon, Dill and Hot Farmers. We will probably make some Fresh Mozzarella this week as well. See you Saturday.

THE SPICY HERMIT

The Spicy Hermit makes delicious varieties of gluten-free, vegan, and preservative-free kimchi, using local produce from neighboring farms (some of them at the market!).  Kimchi is a traditional Korean fermented dish, usually made with cabbages, though we like to experiment and use other seasonal, local vegetables, such as collard greens or kohlrabi.

TERRA CLOTHA

Ginkgo trees have been around for a long time; there are fossils about 170 million years old that look very similar to today’s trees. I first became aware of such trees because of a single ginkgo tree in one of the public areas of the university I attended in Louisiana. It stood out because it was the only tree on campus to consistently change color in the fall. I admired it then, and I have continue to admire the ginkgo trees in downtown Durham with their distinctive yellow fan-shaped leaves in the fall. Terra Clotha has a variety of ginkgo designs on t-shirts for other ginkgo enthusiasts.

SARAH’S HOUSE OF CLAY

The sweetest thing happened last week at Market.

Market was busy with customers coming and going, some buying, some browsing. Hints of spring  nipped the air. 

One customer lingered near my front table. She came around and began asking me questions, questions I couldn’t quite figure out.

Did she run a camp and need more kids?  Does she have access to needy kids who are looking for camp opportunities?  What is she asking me?

Turns out she was remembering the affordable fiber arts studio from her childhood that had given her an opportunity her family couldn’t otherwise have afforded. 

And now she finds herself in a position of modest means and wants to offer to cover the expense for one child to come to one day of camp.

My heart exploded with gratitude. 

I want to spread this little piece of joy far and wide, to encourage each of us to step in and step up in all the ways great and small that we can.

Every right next step sends ripples through our community. 

So ripple on!

We grow loofa and make body products using shea, jojoba, goats milk and other skin loving ingredients. We can ship our products to your loved ones and make seasonal gifts. HARLAND’S CREEK FARM

The Alston-Degraffenried House, a national historic site, is on the farm and was built in 1810. Because of this long history, Harland’s Creek Farm focuses on native and heirloom varieties of plants. Many of the flower bouquets they make could have been in someone’s parlor in the 1800s.

When Judy Lessler first moved there in the 1970’s, kudzu covered the yard and fields and was growing onto the porch of the house. After clearing, she discovered an old fruit and flower garden to the east of the house. In the fall of 2001, she built a parterre on the site of this old garden, using a plan that was inspired by drawings of 18th century gardens. Flowers and decorative shrubs are grown in the parterre. 

Today, Judy, Erasmo and Rene have 5 acres under production and are divided into three plots that have been opened successively over time since 2001. They grow our own transplants. Soil amendments include compost, feather meal, rock phosphate, sulfate of potash, bone meal, lime, or manure. Mulching and cover crops are used to build the soil. Pest management includes 6-8 foot fences to keep deer out, row-covers and flash tape to deter birds and rabbits, and occasionally we use OMRI approved substances for control of pests. Post-harvest handling consists of cold storage in an on farm walk in cooler. Flowers are conditioned using either Vita Products, Inc. or their own on farm mixture using substances that are compliant with the National Organic Program Standards.

As well as selling at the Saturday and Wednesday markets, Harland’s Creek Farm offers a CSA pick-up at each of these locations. These CSAs are operated with other farmers who sell at the Durham Farmers’ Market. Harland’s Creek Farm is certified organic.

Fricks Apiaries is a family farm based in Chapel Hill. We sell locally-produced raw honey and other beehive-sourced products. Our handmade beeswax candles are 100% beeswax with cotton wicks. We also supply queens and nucs to local beekeepers.

About Boxcarr: We take inspiration from small Italian farmstead creameries. Our local milk is sourced from a few small family-owned dairies who raise their cows with the greatest of care and highest standards. Milk from our own loved herd of mixed-breed dairy goats is also part of the mix! In addition to supporting these small dairy businesses, we employ a handful of locals, teach through internships, and employ youth through Orange County Second Family Foundation.
