Eva Green is a fourth generation basket weaver. Eva was skillfully taught the art of basket weaving by her mother, Nadine Degraffenreaidt.

Hand weaving baskets is Eva’s biggest passion.  She really enjoys making intricate baskets. Weaving baskets with designs that are difficult to achieve provides a rewarding challenge for her. Eva uses berries, nuts, flowers, vegetables, and anything that will make a stain to dye the reed for her baskets. 

She has been awarded numerous ribbons for baskets and teaches locally at different community colleges.

Jewels of Health Farm, owned by Julius Griffin, is a 180 acre farm in Louisburg, N.C. His main crop is heirloom watermelons, including white, yellow, orange, red, and pink varieties, as well as heirloom tomatoes, herbs, and ginger. He uses all parts of the fruit except the outer skin to create delicious and healthy cold pressed juices.

LIL’ FARM

Hello from Lil' Farm! The frogs are singing their hearts out, the tulip trees have bloomed and rain is coming down again. This week we will be at market with a mountain of greens - Kale, Chard, Arugula, Lettuce mix, Collards, Hakurai Turnips, Lettuce heads, Dandelion, Parsley and more. You can still sign up for our Spring CSA!  Join us for a fresh, colorful, nutritious future bounty.  This year the CSA will run April 3rd through June 26th (13 weeks). Like last year, we are offering a Home Delivery option and 2 pick up sites in Durham (West Durham and South Durham).Go to www.lilfarm.com, -go into the shop- then choose either the home delivery or one of the pick up options, depending on what you’d like.

What is a CSA? CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture. It is a farming model based on developing a direct relationship between farmers and their community. A weekly box of lovely seasonal veggies ( and strawberries!) is the glorious result. This is an opportunity to support a farmer by purchasing in advance the most seasonal and successful crops available while acknowledging that some crops will not always work out with the endless variables at play. The good news is, we grow so many different things you may never notice our secret failings. It's a way for you to directly invest closer into the success and failures of a local farm/ food system.

The CSA box contents will rotate each week as vegetables come in and out of season. You will receive the freshest and best veggies we can provide. We will be sending you a digital newsletter each week telling you what you can expect and ideas on how to use it. The newsletter will be chock full of photos and updates from the farm, as well as rants on whatever happens to be inspiring or bugging us. We grow anything and everything we can, from strawberries and summer squash to greens galore. Please join us or share with anyone who would like to be a part.

Based on the Haw River in Saxapahaw, By The Brook crafts seasonal sauerkrauts, hot sauces, condiments, and tempeh (a highly digestible plant protein made from beans). Our goal is to funk up your table with flavor: specifically, the unique flavors that result from the astonishing process of fermentation.

THE SPICY HERMIT

Kimchi is a great addition to rice bowls. Basically you just scoop rice into a bowl, add your protein, a few greens and veggies, and a dollop of kimchi! If you want make it a bit fancy, you could add a cup of miso soup.

LAKAY FARM

LaKay is a poultry farm located in Louisburg, North Carolina. Dulime and Myrlande are Haitian farmers going back to their roots, growing fresh vegetables and fruits while raising registered Nubian and Nigerian Dwarf goats holistically. They follow regenerative techniques and raise their animals as humanly as possible with no hormones or additives.

Piedmont Microgreens is an indoor farm located just four miles from the farmer's market! We specialize in microgreens, which are the youngest stage of vegetable crops. Microgreens are great because they're beautiful, tasty, and packed with nutrients. We will be bringing the following microgreens to the market: sunflower shoots, pea shoots, nutrition mix, salad mix, a farmer's choice, and a few specialty varieties, like cilantro, dill, and onion! The nutrition mix is a blend of broccoli, cabbage, and kohlrabi microgreens, while the salad mix is a blend of sunflower shoots, buckwheat, and kale microgreens. BILL POPE PHOTOGRAPHY

Bill Pope was one of the original vendors of the Durham Farmers’ Market in 1999. Bill’s goal is to highlight the beauty of this area, especially Durham. The large, amber gnarled roots of the Red Dawnwood tree at Duke Gardens, the diverse store fronts on Main Street, the old Wrigley mural on Parrish Street, and the deep purple cut irises at the Durham Farmers’ Market have been some of his many subjects. 

Many customers frame Bill’s greeting cards. The cards are also sent around the world. He cherishes an e-mail from a female army officer in Iraq who praised a landscape of Duke Gardens for adding “color” to her surroundings and easing her homesickness.

Bill also sells postcards and matted 8″x10″ enlargements of landscapes, flowers, and downtown scenes.

Surprise!  With this warmer weather in the next few days, the asparagus crop is trying to break dormancy... along with a few "Ruby June" strawberries ripening.  Come early for the best selection on Saturday.   Remember, we open the DFM at 8:00 a.m. starting this Saturday. 

Stock up with meaty bones and make your own nutritious broth during the winter.   Over the weekend, we made homemade broth soup using our wholesome bones and it was so delicious.    Not only for me, but my big white, hard working farm dogs, Sally & George, are now getting the bone broth cooked down from the knuckle marrow bones.   They seem to have more energy and look healthier when I top dress the broth over their kibble.

CHAPEL HILL CREAMERY

FARMHOUSE CHEESE: Come see us in our summer spot just past the information table. We have Danziger that is ready to sell this week! Also available are Dairyland Farmers, Hot Farmers, well-aged Calvander, savory Hickory Grove, New Moon, and Carolina Moon. Danziger is a soft to semi soft washed-rind cheese, and this batch is luscious. It’s also milder than most "stinky" cheese. The culture we wash onto the rind gives it a distinctive, umami flavor which is reminiscent of an amber ale or mushroom broth balanced with the creamy richness of our Jersey cows’ milk. Spread some on a baguette and enjoy with ripe pears.

Our pastures are growing like crazy which gives us lots of grass for our rotational grazing system. The herd stays on a section for a short while and then the cows move to the next section. They get more grass and the first section can grow back for the next rotation. We are Animal Welfare Approved which includes an inspection every spring.
