  • Abanitu Organics

Abanitu Organics is owned and operated by Bernard Obie. The farm, located in Roxboro, is 32 acres of mostly woodlands, pasture and meadows, with about 5 acres under cultivation. Obie, a fifth generation farmer, is committed to building a healthy farm eco-system using a no-till approach on re-mineralized, naturally enriched soil. Abanitu Farms is a certified organic farm. Their mission is to cultivate food that achieves its genetic potential for nutrition, healing and flavor.

  • Bill Pope Photos

Bill Pope was one of the original vendors of the Durham Farmers’ Market in 1999. Bill’s goal is to highlight the beauty of this area, especially Durham. The large, amber gnarled roots of the Red Dawnwood tree at Duke Gardens, the diverse store fronts on Main Street, the old Wrigley mural on Parrish Street, and the deep purple cut irises at the Durham Farmers’ Market have been some of his many subjects.

Many customers frame Bill’s greeting cards. The cards are also sent around the world. He cherishes an e-mail from a female army officer in Iraq who praised a landscape of Duke Gardens for adding “color” to her surroundings and easing her homesickness.

Bill also sells postcards and matted 8″x10″ enlargements of landscapes, flowers, and downtown scenes.

  • Bklyn Vegan Bakery

  • Bluebird Meadows

Stuart and Alice White love the environment and choose to farm sustainably, with as minimal an impact on the environment as possible. They do not use synthetic fertilizers or chemicals. Instead, they use lots of compost (worm castings are considered ‘black gold’ among farming enthusiasts), leaf mulch, and cover crops to keep their soil healthy and their biodiversity up. They also hope to incorporate aspects of permaculture on their farm, creating a healthy, closed system with as little outsourcing for material and soil amendments as possible.

Bluebird Meadows offers Wednesday home delivery within a 5 mile radius of Downtown Durham ($30 minimum and $5 delivery fee) in addition to Saturday pick up at market (order before Friday morning, no minimum). Pre-order here.

  • Boxcarr Cheese

We take inspiration from small Italian farmstead creameries. Our local milk is sourced from a few small family-owned dairies who raise their cows with the greatest of care and highest standards. Milk from our own loved herd of mixed-breed dairy goats is also part of the mix! In addition to supporting these small dairy businesses, we employ a handful of locals, teach through internships, and employ youth through Orange County Second Family Foundation.

We distribute our artisan cheeses nationally, while also selling locally to restaurants, shops, and directly to shoppers at the Durham Farmers Market.

Our dedication to family, hard work, and great food are the soul of Boxcarr Farms and Boxcarr Handmade Cheese. We hope you’ll taste that in every bite.

  • Capritopia Farm

Capritopia Farm a family run farm with 2.5 acres in vegetable production, Alpine Dairy Goats, and chickens for fresh eggs. They also have fruit trees, grapevines, and young pecan trees on the farm. Capritopia Farm specializes in growing ginger and turmeric.

  • Celebrity Dairy

Following time-honored French farmstead techniques, Celebrity Dairy transforms goat’s milk into fresh goat cheese, or chèvre. Simply put, Celebrity Dairy’s chèvre is an honest expression of owners Brit and Flemming, of their farm, and of their place in time.

Like many specialty farm products, their cheese is fragile, and suffers from the abuses of shipping. They honor their cheese’s distinctive qualities by selling locally, thereby allowing them to hand deliver directly to their customers at local farmers’ markets, area restaurants that proudly feature it on their menus, and select local grocery stores.

None of this occurs in a vacuum: Celebrity Dairy is an integral part of Chatham County’s vigorous and growing low impact, sustainable agriculture community that produces high quality seasonal farm products in and for the Piedmont region. Brit and Flemming encourage and advise other cheesemakers in North Carolina, and work with the NC Ag Extension Service on conserving small family farms. On a broader scale, they support the American Cheese Society and the Slow Foods movement.

Celebrity Dairy practices low impact, sustainable farming.

  • Chapel Hill Creamery

This Saturday, we're bringing steaks and other cuts of beef in addition to ground beef. Our beef comes from our farm, and the Jersey cows are pasture-raised and Animal Welfare Approved. This breed is known for flavor when compared to other breeds.

Cheeses include Calvander (made last September), Pimento Cheese, Carolina Moon, aged feta, savory Hickory Grove, maybe a little Romano-ish cheese, unaged Dairyland Farmers, and Hot and Dill Farmers. Justin is pictured "dressing" the Hickory Grove before it goes into the cheese press. Hickory Grove is a buttery, washed-rind cheese that melts well. Use it for burgers, omelets, or snacking. Enjoy the market!

  • Cilantro Artisan Foods

Cilantro was inspired by friendship and love for Mexican food. Long time friends Maria Pacheco and Martha Arango met in Durham, NC and started a journey through food flavors imported from Mexico and Colombia with a background of Rancheras and good tequila.

After constantly feeling homesick, Maria, a Guanajuato – Mexico transplant, created Cilantro’s unique menu by bringing her childhood flavors to North Carolina. Martha has always had a passion for Mexican food and culture and her graphic design background made her the perfect partner to join Maria in creating Cilantro Artisan Foods.

  • Harland's Creek Farm

The Alston-Degraffenried House, a national historic site, is on the farm and was built in 1810. Because of this long history, Harland’s Creek Farm focuses on native and heirloom varieties of plants. Many of the flower bouquets they make could have been in someone’s parlor in the 1800s.

When Judy Lessler first moved there in the 1970’s, kudzu covered the yard and fields and was growing onto the porch of the house. After clearing, she discovered an old fruit and flower garden to the east of the house. In the fall of 2001, she built a parterre on the site of this old garden, using a plan that was inspired by drawings of 18th century gardens. Flowers and decorative shrubs are grown in the parterre.

Today, Judy, Erasmo and Rene have 5 acres under production and are divided into three plots that have been opened successively over time since 2001. They grow our own transplants. Soil amendments include compost, feather meal, rock phosphate, sulfate of potash, bone meal, lime, or manure. Mulching and cover crops are used to build the soil. Pest management includes 6-8 foot fences to keep deer out, row-covers and flash tape to deter birds and rabbits, and occasionally we use OMRI approved substances for control of pests. Post-harvest handling consists of cold storage in an on farm walk in cooler. Flowers are conditioned using either Vita Products, Inc. or their own on farm mixture using substances that are compliant with the National Organic Program Standards.

As well as selling at the Saturday and Wednesday markets, Harland’s Creek Farm offers a CSA pick-up at each of these locations. These CSAs are operated with other farmers who sell at the Durham Farmers’ Market. Harland’s Creek Farm is certified organic.

The farm is now offering the ability to pre-order farm products. Please email the farm at hcffamers@gmail.com to find out availability and pricing for CSA boxes and options for delivery and pick-up.

  • Honeygirl Meadery

Honeygirl Meadery is Durham’s first meadery, and they make meads to celebrate nature and the work of honeybees. Mead is an ancient alcoholic beverage, made by fermenting honey, water and yeast, often with added fruits, herbs and spices. Their meads are made with a modern cook’s perspective, with fresh local seasonal fruits, flowers, herbs and honey. Fermented for at least 90 days, and sometimes aged for almost a year, their menu of meads changes seasonally. Check our website for the latest releases.

Made in downtown Durham NC, Honeygirl meads are hand-crafted in small batches, using all natural ingredients. They use honey from reputable sources both near and far, including NC honey whenever supplies are abundant. They emphasize local whenever possible, including sourcing fruit from NC farms and corks from Zebulon, NC.

They offer a variety of meads, from dry to slightly sweet. They like to explore all the nuances of flavor that happen when honey is fermented into mead. By using wildflower honey in most of the meads, we get to experience all the places that the bees visited. Each mead is truly unique and reflects the terroir of the areas the bees foraged.

  • Moondance Soaps

They’re here! We love the season but wish the mosquitoes would leave us to our peaceful outdoor moments.

All natural, harnessing power of geraniol, try our Bugs at Bay to keep those mosquitoes away. Do you stay outside a lot or go camping?  Regular use of our outdoor herbal soap can be a helpful additional step.

We love our bug spray because it smells like geraniums and it’s safe enough to use around our neck and face.

  • Mu Ta Ka Paw Garden

Mu Ta K Paw Garden has been a family-run farm in Chapel Hill since 2009, providing fresh, high-quality produce. We grow a wide variety of greens, herbs, and flowers, and specialize in growing Asian vegetables suited to the local climate.

Dedicated to sustainable, chemical-free farming, Mu Ta K Paw Garden uses eco-friendly techniques such as intercropping, cover cropping, mulching, and drip irrigation. The farm maximizes limited space and extends the growing season by cultivating tropical crops in greenhouses, all while avoiding the use of heavy machinery.

Now in its 15th year of offering a CSA program, Mu Ta K Paw Garden is proud to operate independently after many years of support from Transplanting Traditions Community Farm, a nonprofit organization that empowers refugee farmers from Burma. The farm currently operates on approximately two acres, growing both flowers and vegetables.

Visit our website to learn more about us. You can also support our farm by signing up for our year-round CSA program at https://www.mutakapawgarden.com/csa.

  • Ninth Street Bakery

Determined to change the bread landscape, Ninth Street Bakery was founded by two brothers in 1981 fresh from a stint baking at the Tassajara Zen Center with monk Ed Espe Brown. They brought with them recipes for wholegrain goodness and a mind for doing good works in Durham. Known by many for its seeded sliced pan loaves, NSB now has crusty artisan bread products that burst with the flavors of natural levain, and flaky pastries that slow rise to perfection. Helmed by baker Ari Berenbaum

Since 2013, NSB sits at Five Points in Durham, an anchor business in an ever-changing city. We have a full service café, as well as a robust wholesale program that covers the Triad from Greensboro to Raleigh, Durham to Chapel Hill and Carrboro. We give back to the community via our Bakery- and donor-supported Durham Neighbors program, an in-house experiment in Universal Basic Income whereby we Cashapp 100+ low-income local families every month $50 which goes to much-needed groceries, utility bills, or diapers. We are psyched to be now an official member of the Durham Farmer’s Market, joining an illustrious crew of artisans and purveyors who are dedicated to local, independent, small business, and Southern gastronomical culture.

You can follow us at Instagram.com/ninthstreetbakery or read Ari’s musings on bread and Durham at blog.ninthstbakery.com.

  • Piedmont Microgreens

Piedmont Microgreens is an indoor farm located just four miles from the farmer's market! We specialize in microgreens, which are the youngest stage of vegetable crops. Microgreens are great because they're beautiful, tasty, and packed with nutrients. We will be bringing the following microgreens to the market: sunflower shoots, pea shoots, nutrition mix, salad mix, a farmer's choice, and a few specialty varieties, like cilantro, dill, and onion! The nutrition mix is a blend of broccoli, cabbage, and kohlrabi microgreens, while the salad mix is a blend of sunflower shoots, buckwheat, and kale microgreens. The farmer's choice will be a revolving blend of what inspires us each week.

  • Terra Clotha

These children’s dresses come in great colors and have the ability to wear like iron. They’re dressy enough to wear to a fancy restaurant, and comfortable enough to wear on the playground. We’ve had some parents who tell us their child would wear their dress every day if they could. We’ve had some parents who buy a dress in a size slightly larger than they normally would get. What starts out as a long dress for a 4-year-old becomes a short dress by the time they’re ready to buy a new one three or four years later. And for the younger set (3 months to 24 months), we have bubble rompers in a variety of colors.
